The 14th Annual Conference 2025
“Revisiting Sustainability”
August 29-30, 2025 at Musashi University in Tokyo, Japan
Call for Proposals
Deadline of Proposals: June 10, 2025
The Japan Forum for Business and Society has focused on "sustainability" as a key theme in its annual conferences, beginning with the inaugural event in 2011 on "Sustainable Development and Multi-Stakeholders." Parallel to our own journey, the United Nations Summit unanimously adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015. As we approach 2025, the 10th anniversary of the SDGs, and with only five years remaining to achieve the 17 international goals, this milestone prompts reflection. At this conference, we will review our sustainability efforts to date and explore future initiatives from multiple perspectives.
Initial efforts by companies to address sustainability were slow when the SDGs were first adopted. However, since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, companies have become more proactive in communicating their sustainability efforts to society through media outlets. Such efforts have also been integrated into school education, and now even elementary and middle school students are involved in sustainability initiatives, showing how deeply this concept has permeated society.
Over the past decade, the understanding and awareness of the term "sustainability" have evolved in various ways, both positively and negatively. For instance, the recent trend of companies using sustainability initiatives to cover up scandals, known as "greenwashing," is an example of the negative side. In any case, reflecting on sustainability efforts provides an excellent opportunity to understand how much progress has been made toward achieving the 17 SDG goals and to consider the remaining challenges.
